Xfm Meets Spiritualized

On the eve of the release of their sixth album, 'Songs In A & E', Xfm met with Spiritualized mainman Jason Pierce to discuss the album's gestation, his near-death experience and why fire is such a recurring theme in his work.
Do you feel you've found a balance of sounds on the new album?
"No. Becuase I think they find their own space...it's more accidental..." [Listen To Full Answer]
Why did it take you so long to finish the album?
"When I went back to the songs they sounded like eleven old songs..." [Listen To Full Answer]
Do you feel your illness played a part in the new album?
"I had these ideas when I came out of hospital that I'd write these pieces..." [Listen To Full Answer]
Your music has a very strong effect on your fans. Do you mean for it to be so powerful?
"Kind of, but in a very selfish way... Some people get it, some people don't..." [Listen To Full Answer]
You often have the theme of fire in your songs. Why do you have a particular interest in that element?
"It's energy, everybody knows that feeling..." [Listen To Full Answer]
What can we expect from the live shows?
"That's the first time I've stood up with an electric guitar in four years..." [Listen To Full Answer]
You use gospel singers in your songs. Do you find any conflict with what they are actually singing to what they represent?
"Whether you've got faith or not, you're allowed to ask questions..." [Listen To Full Answer]
Spiritualized seems to have a timeless quality, a metaphorical language for a Universal Truth. What do you attribute that to?
"I think that's the greatest thing about music...it's so much more important than the stories..." [Listen To Full Answer]
What keeps you motivated after so long?
"Because I love it. You can manipulate these weird little sounds..." [Listen To Full Answer]
Do you think there would ever be a Spaceman 3 reunion?
"Why would I want to go back? It's about pushing forward..." [Listen To Full Answer]
