Xfm Meets The Smiths

Blimey O'Riley! Xfm's very own Steve Harris managed to wangle an interview with Mike Joyce. Listen to the interview here to find out about the new Smiths album, Manchester's music scene and possible reunions...Don't get too excited.
Since the demise of The Smiths (get over it, it's so 1987), drummer Mike Joyce has worked with the likes of Buzzcocks, Julian Cope, Sinead O'Connor and on Morrissey's solo records.
With the release of a new Smiths compilation 'The Sound Of The Smiths', Xfm's Steve Harris caught up with Joyce to find out what he's been up to and to reminisce about some of his best Smiths moments, and, most importantly, to get to the bottom of those 'are they aren't they' reunion rumours...
So what was your involvement in the new album 'The Sound Of The Smiths'?
"My involvement is I'm playing drums on all the tracks...I'm so glad that Morrissey has been involved in it..." [Listen To Full Answer]
This compilation is slightly different to the others. What do you think of the album?
"They're not so obvious the tracks that have been included...people might be spurred on to look at our other recordings..." [Listen To Full Answer]
You said that 'Rank' is your second favourite album. What is your favourtie Smiths album?
"'Strangeways'...by that point there was nothing left to prove to anybody..." [Listen To Full Answer]
There are rumours of The Smiths reforming- can you confirm if they're a load of old baloney?
"It's very very doubtful...Morrisey said he would rather eat his own testicles, and thats coming from a vegetarian..." [Listen To Full Answer]
You're very involved in the Manchester music scene. What are you working on at the moment?
"I'm working with a band called Autokat...I also DJ now and then, I'm starting a club night at the Brickhouse in Manchester..." [Listen To Full Answer]
All done? Why don't you have a look at our gallery of Smiths classic covers as well?
