Xfm Meets New Order

Bass God Peter Hook tells Xfm how the band rose from the ashes of indie legends Joy Division and produced some of the most enduring music of the 1980s...
In 1980, Joy Division were on the verge of mainstream success. Their debut album 'Unknown Pleasures' was a huge independent hit, putting their label Factory on the map, and the follow-up, 'Closer', was the most anticipated album since 'Never Mind The Bollocks'.
But the suicide of singer Ian Curtis on the eve of the band's first American tour halted Joy Division's meteoric rise. The remaining three members - guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris - vowed to carry on as New Order, but were faced with an immediate problem... they had lost their singer, lyricist and leader.
With the remastering and reissuing of the first five New Order albums - 'Movement', 'Power Corruption And Lies', 'Low Life', 'Brotherhood' and 'Technique' - Xfm sat Peter Hook down and asked him whether he was still happy to talk about the past. He took us through the painful first steps of New Order, the making of the seminal 'Blue Monday' and why playing electronic music live in the 1980s wasn't always plain sailing.
