X-clusive: The Super Furry Solo Album

The Super Furry Animals dropped in on Ian Camfield's Music:Response on Monday (October 4) for a four-song live set to celebrate the release of their singles compilation. While there, head Furry Gruff Rhys revealed all about his forthcoming solo record and why the next SFA album sounds like “Steely Dan on crack.”
Super Furry Animals release their singles compilation ‘Songbook Vol. 1’ this week but Xfm can reveal they're already currently hard at work on their next studio album. Despite this, frontman Gruff Rhys has also found time to release a solo record.
“I needed to get it out of the way because we’re in the middle of a new Furry album,” he explained to Xfm, “It was accidentally made at my mates house and so we’re just gonna stick it out in January on [the band’s own label] Placid Casual.”
Entitled 'Yr Atal Genhedlaeth', the record features eleven songs and was recorded with producer Gorwel Owen at various points during spring and summer 2004.
Speaking about the new Super Furry’s record, Rhys continued, “It’s almost all done, we’re very excited. It’s pretty colossal – we’ve never had the rhythm section come into its own so much. It’s very up-front. Everybody’s churning songs out all the time.
“It’s never a problem choosing which songs [are the best], more what kind of album we want to make. It’s been described as Steely Dan on crack by the producer. That’s just an idea of where its going and how colossal it sounds.”
The band also spoke about the pressures of following up their previous offerings after so much critical acclaim.
“Actually, we tend to not like the last album we did, so it’s quite easy," guitarist Huw 'Bunf' Bunford concluded, "We’re still just looking for that sound.”
Super Furry Animals release 'Songbook: Vol. 1' this week (October 4).
