Turin Brakes ‘Ether Song’

While 2001’s ‘The Optimist LP’ failed to deliver on the promise of their early EPs, Turin Brakes, sophomore album is the sound of Ollie Knights and Gale Paridjanian coming of age.

From the chiming drive of openers ‘Blue Hour’ and ‘Average Man’ to the sheer melodic exuberance of ‘Clear Blue Air’ and current single ‘Pain Killer’, these are songs that in their scale and scope are right up there with peak period U2. Before a misplaced affection for post-modernism and a hyperactive social conscience gutted Bono and co.

No danger of that for Turin Brakes – having nimbly escaped the doomed ‘New Acoustic Movement’ last year, here Ollie and Gale bolster their twin guitars with keys, strings and some nifty blues slide. Particularly on the stirring ‘Long Distance’, where the strings sweep and soar as Ollie launches into the chorus; “I let somebody get under my skin/Long distance losing is all that I’ve seen”Right now Turin Brakes occupy unique territory – not for them the swansongs of loss and desperation favoured by most of their acoustic-toting brethren. ‘Ether Song’ is as uplifting as it is affecting. You’ll cry for all the right reasons.
