Karl Pilkington Biography

added 20 May 2005 at 14.18

Xfm Producer Karl Pilkington is either one of the greatest comedy talents of this generation, or a partially shaved monkey that can talk. Find out which it is by reading his biography right here.

Karl is on-air every Saturday 13:00-15:00

Ooh! Chimpanzee that! Check out the animated monkey news.

What were you up to before Xfm?

"I've had a few jobs but I think my paper round was me favourite. I think if you're good at a job you enjoy it more and I was really good at delivering papers. I always wonder why someone would want to be a doctor, all the pressure of taking someone's heart out and patching it up and then bunging it back in sounds like the worse job in the world to me, but then if you're good at it I suppose you might enjoy it.
A doctor might not be that good at delivering papers though."

What was the first record you bought?

"Gary Glitter's 'I Love, You Love (My Only True Love)'."

What was the first gig you went to?

"It was Public Enemy with support from Derek B and Run DMC at the Manchester Apollo. I wasn't a big fan of that stuff, I went with a mate who had a spare ticket. I like songs that have a story like Elvis' 'In the Ghetto' or Stevie Wonder's 'Living For The City', simple songs with a start, middle and an end. I didn't like Public Enemy, they were just rapping about the world's problems all night. It was like a musical of 'Newsnight'."

What advice would you give to someone who wants to do what you do?

"My proper job at Xfm is making promos and idents. I sit in a studio on my own all day from about 9am - 7pm, sat in front of a computer editing stuff and dealing with promotions people who hassle me to make stuff so they can get their bonus at the end of the month. Who wants to do what I do?"
