The androgynous Antony arrived in the Xfm sessions with his well-connected band to perform their debut Xfm session.

With current album ‘I Am A Bird Now’ gathering rave reviews from all sectors of the British press and the likes of Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart cropping up as special guests, expectations are high for Antony & The Johnsons. Recently signed to Rough Trade records they are expected to make a big impact over the coming year having recently played a sold-out gig at the Royal Festival Hall.

Lyricist Antony had been singing for years as a drag queen in cabaret bars across New York prior to becoming a recording artist in his own right.  This previous experiences has clearly influenced his current work; dark, eerie chamber music to soundtrack a kinky night in a burlesque house.

The tender ‘Fist Full of Love’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband] sets the tone for the rest of the session with the stripped back sound of Antony’s beautiful voice accompanied by a solitary electric guitar. ‘My Ladies Story’  [Dial-Up] [Broadband] and ‘You Are My Sister’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband] are both so eerie the tracks themselves are probably haunted. 

Finally, Antony’s voice on  ‘Hope There’s Someone’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband]  comes over like a one man choir.
