Queens of The Stone Age on 'Lullabies To Paralyse'

added 16 March 2005 at 16.45

Josh Homme and Troy Van Leeuwen talk John Kennedy through the mighty Queen's latest magnum opus, the sinister eclectic 'Lullabies To Paralyze'. Hear the record in full plus Josh and Troy's commentary.

One of the most violently inspirational bands of recent times, Queens of The Stone Age meld a delicate artistic instinct with a prodigious appetite for substance abuse, one of the most comprehensive contacts books in the business and riffs that could uproot treetrunks.

Now album number four - and the first without founder bassist Nick Oliveri, who left last year amid rumours of mental shananigans - is here. It's a diverse, eclectic affair combingi a healthy disrespect for established genre with a dazzling array of special guests.

'This Lullaby'
"It's sort of got a renaissance fair thing happening. We all wore big floppy purple hats." [listen]

'Medication'
"It almost starts like 'Feelgood Hit of The Summer' - it's an aggressive song, it's anger. It's like the medication's wearing off, not coming on. In a way it almost feels like an answer to 'Feelgood Hit...'" [listen]

'Everybody Knows That You Are Insane'
"It's not about Nick. If it was about Nick I'd be the most obvious dumbass in all of London. In all of England, for that matter." [listen]

'Tangled Up In Plaid'
"I think it's almost like being caught in a web of plaid, the colours of life turn into all colours. And it's also about bopping a song title off Bob Dylan's head." [listen]

'Burn The Witch'
"I just love the imagery, and if it ain't real I can't do it. AlthoughI did not actually burn a witch. So I just lied." [listen]

'In My Head'
"It's absolutely a lovesick song; feeling isolated on the other side of the world where you can only touch by a phone line, or all you have is references. It's about going nuts." [listen]

'Little Sister'
"We tried a version of it on 'Songs For The Deaf' and it sounded like Molly Ringwald dancing. It was a lot faster, it was just kinda lame you know? And now it's not like that." [listen]

'I Never Came'
"I feel really proud of this song, 'cos it's kind of going out on a limb and I think that's where you should always be." [listen]

'Someone's In The Wolf'
"In the record this is where you get caught in the woods with the sun going down and if this is the record for you, by now you can't get out." [listen]

'The Blood Is Love'
"I remember being on the bus and he played it for me and I was like - 'That sucks Josh! Throw that away now!..." [listen]

'Skin On Skin'
"It's about not being able to control your lust, which I seem to be stuck in, as I bury the mike in my hindquarters..." [listen]

'Broken Box'
"This is usually the outcome of extreme lust - what the hell was I thinking?! It even tells the girl to take her broken cat home..." [listen]

'You Got A Killer Scene There, Man'
"This song was another birth in the studio at five in the morning when we were all thinking of going home this just sort of said 'No, you're not leaving'. It needed that 'Oh my God I'm gonna fall asleep!' vibe." [listen]

'Long Slow Goodbye'
"I would have to say that's one of my favourite songs on the record - there just seems to be a simplicity to it." [listen]
