Courtney To Sell Kurt’s Estate?

added 03 February 2005 at 10.56

Courtney Love may be forced to sell the family estate of her late husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain as the costs of her multiple and ongoing legal battles mount up.

It is reported that former Hole frontwoman Courtney Love may have to sell a Cobain family estate to pay off her mounting legal bills. Love is allegedly just days from a deadline to resolve non-payment of legal fees in one civil case, while another company is also claiming non-payment according to a complaint filed recently in Olympia, Washington.

The WMC Mortgage Corp is seeking foreclosure on the 13-acre property bought by Love in 1997 for her late husband Kurt Cobain's family meaning that the home would be put up for bidding at a public auction.

MTV has reported that the star, now performing as a solo artist, owes in excess of $318,000 to WMC with the company claiming that she has not paid the bills in over a year.

She is also looking into a large sum of money that she claims has been “stolen” from her. Speaking to Blender magazine in April she said, "$40 million (£21.2 million) has been stolen from me and (her daughter) Frances by a fiduciary institution. My daughter's trust fund has been stolen from to the point where she may have, like, nothing. I can't let this happen to Frances."

As for actual music from the Courtney camp, Love is reported to have commenced work on the follow up to her solo debut, last year’s tepidly received ‘American Sweetheart’. The new album also sees her reunited with former Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan frontman Billy Corgan, who co-wrote much of ‘American Sweetheart’

“I didn't pick up a guitar the whole time,” she explained of the recording process, “I let go to a degree that it's starting to bother me. I had a dream that I was holding a frame of a painting in my hand, but it was really a guitar, which to me symbolizes that my frame is how I play guitar and I need to adjust these songs that I wrote where I just sang melody lines.

“They're more narrative, acoustic-based. Someone like Elliott Smith would just take a guitar and narrate, and that's something Billy brought up that I need to do. What we wrote with an eye towards was Dylan's ‘Tangled Up in Blue’, that really cool era of Dylan.

“That's why these songs need a big, huge hit of speed, and since that would be illegal, I need to drink a lot of fucking coffee and sit down and really figure out what it is I want to say. They are beautifully arranged tunes so far.”
