Doherty Documentary Broadcast

added 02 February 2005 at 10.46

The full interview from BBC’s Newsnight recent interview with Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty will be broadcast in a television special which will include previously unseen footage of the troubled star.

The troubled singer was interviewed by Kirsty Wark about his turbulent career, jail time and much documented drug problems shortly before Christmas, for a feature on Newsnight which was first aired on December 21, 2004.

Now the full interview including many previously unbroadcast scenes has been made into a 30-minute special which will be transmitted on BBC4 at 23.30 on Tuesday February 15.

Included in the new material is Doherty talking
about how it felt being sent to prison for stealing from his band mate and former best friend, Carl Barat.

"It was frightening,” he explained, “I was a fish out of water really because I was a category D prisoner really with no form in a category A jail for gangsters and what-not." But he says: "I got an easy ride. I wasn't in there for ever and some people got 15 or 16 years for things which really I've done myself and never got caught for."

Doherty goes on to say he wants to repair their relationship and he would like to play with The Libertines again, but when Kirsty asks him if he wants to kick his drug habit and get clean, he replies,

"I don't know - I suppose one man's cleanliness is another man's dirty water - you know what I mean. So no matter how clean your blood is - it's what in your soul... I'm sure if the thought police came round, they'd find other people far dirtier than me.

"I know where the self destruct button is. I just have to resist the temptation to push it."

Doherty also performed The Libertines’ track ‘Music When The Lights Go Out’ on the show.

Babyshambles (with thair new drummer) will play Brixton Academy on February 22. Tickets are priced at £17 and are available either by calling the Xfm Xchange on 0871 222 1049 or from the Xfm Online Ticket Shop by clicking here
