NME Awards Nominations Announced

In a list of nominations that eerily mirrors next week’s Brit Awards, Franz Ferdinand are up for five awards - Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album, Best Track (for ‘Take Me Out’) and Best Video at the annual music event.
Elsewhere The Libertines and The Streets have four nominations, while The Scissor Sisters and Razorlight have three each. Mercury Prize-winners Franz Ferdinand are up against Kasabian, The Libertines, Muse and Snow Patrol in the Best British Band category, while the Best New Band category sees four British groups, Babyshambles, Bloc Party, Kasabian and Razorlight up against US group The Killers.
It should prove to be an interesting night if both Babyshambles’ Pete Doherty and his former band The Libertines all turn up. Carl Barat’s recently defunct outfit (who fired Doherty due to his erratic drug-related behaviour early last year) and Babyshambles are both up for the Best Live Band award.
Doherty said in a statement, “It means a lot. Most of my favourite bands did well in the NME polls when I was growing up and I dreamed of being nominated one day.''
Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapronas adds: “Getting five nominations is fantastic news. It's made all the more special by the fact that these have been voted for by the fans.”
“It's been such a great year and receiving such an acknowledgement from the public makes it even more of an honour.''
The ShockWaves NME Awards take place on February 17 at London's Hammersmith Palais and are exclusively voted for by the magazine's readers.
