X-clusive: Franz Write Scottish Football Anthem

added 01 September 2004 at 12.06

Franz Ferdinand’s frontman Alex Kapranos has been speaking to Xfm Online about writing new songs while touring and has revealed his band’s plan to write the official 2006 World Cup song for Scotland.

After storming sets at both the Reading and Leeds Carling Festivals, Franz Ferdinand have been explaining they’re already excited about their upcoming US and UK tours and have unveiled their plans to pen a new football anthem.

“We’re back in Glasgow for a few days, then we’re off to America again,” Kapranos explained, We’re doing another three or four weeks around America, coming back, doing another tour around the UK all over the shop, it’s gonna be quite an extensive one, and then doing a couple of nights at the Barrowlands in Glasgow that I’m really looking forward to, couple of nights in Brixton that should be brilliant,
we’re really excited about that.

“We’re doing a matinee show in Glasgow for kids too. The rules is that adults are only allowed in if accompanied by a child. And that’s gonna be great.

“We’ve also written what we’d like to be the Scotland 2006 World Cup song and we’re gonna debut it at the kids show. It’s got three notes and one word…. I think everyone can work out what the one word is.”

The singer also revealed that the band has a handful of new songs written already including ‘Can’t Stop Feeling’, ‘Your Diary’ and ’This Boy’ (the latter two of which were debuted at Reading) and there are more on the way.

“It’s pretty easy to wrote anywhere, on  a tour bus, in a car park, you can write wherever you want,” Kapranos continued, “But arranging stuff is the really difficult bit, sitting down with the rest of your band making it sound like ‘your’ songs. But we’ve done a bit more of that recently. We did a gig in Prague the other day and we stayed there a few days and arranged a few of the songs, and we’re writing more all the time.”
