Robert Wyatt 'Cuckooland'

The latest solo outing from the hugely influential ex-Soft Machine man is a typically space-age affair, from lush electronica to intense psychedelia. Hear it all here.
That such a clean, organic, optimistic record as Robert Wyatt's 'Cuckooland' can even exist in this day and age is remarkable. That such unrestrained glee comes from a man who, having been tragically paralysed in the seventies, has more than enough reason to be pissed off at the world is almost unbelieveable.
In any case, melancholy is clearly not on Robert Wyatt's agenda - were the cast of the Magic Roundabout ever to take it upon themselves to record an album they'd have difficulty producing something more dreamily psychedelic or determinedly gleeful.
Fronted by Wyatt's avuncular, falsetto tones there's such a powerful sense of comfort and reassurance to this record that - at times- it actually verges on the creepy, particularly on the dischordant 'Cuckoo Madame'. Elsewhere though, the serotonin is set to Lemonjelly-esque levels for one of the most charming, enthralling and unusual records of the year.
