World’s Favourite Song Announced

added 29 September 2005 at 12.56

The results of a poll of the world’s favourite songs of all time (like, ever) have been announced. And it’s a bizarre list at that: Michael Jackson and The Beatles rub shoulders with Shakira and Dire Straits, but the winner is…

Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ has been voted the World’s Favourite Song EVER in a global poll of 700,000 music fans. The poll was conducted by makers of the Sony Ericsson mobile phones, so we’re assuming these were 700,000 ‘music fans who own Sony Ericsson phones’.

Freddie Mercury and his regal rockers kept such classics as ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears (number 2) and Shakira’s international smash (?) ‘La Tortura’ (5) from the top spot.

"It conveys the passion music brings to our lives and proves a classic rock song is truly timeless." said corporate vice president Dee Dutta. Which makes not an iota of sense at all. It just conveys that everyone loves Queen, Americans have the most influence on international music and Shakira is a f**k of a lot more successful than you think.

The top ten looks a little something like this:

  1. Queen 'We Are The Champions'
  2. Britney Spears 'Toxic'
  3. Michael Jackson 'Billie Jean'
  4. The Eagles 'Hotel California'
  5. Shakira 'La Tortura'
  6. Nirvana 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
  7. The Beatles 'Yesterday'
  8. U2 'One'
  9. John Lennon 'Imagine'
  10. Dire Straits 'Sultans Of Swing'

But now we need you, the great Xfm-listening public's view. Which of the ten, really is the greatest? Do those Sony-using 700,000 have a clue? At all? Let us know.
