White Stripes New Single Leaked

added 07 April 2005 at 10.33

The details of the new White Stripes single have appeared on the website of the band’s record label before being hastily removed. However, Xfm can reveal that the new White Stripes single will be titled… ‘Blue Orchid’.

On Tuesday night (April 5) the website of the band’s UK record label posted information that the new single for the White Stripes would be titled ‘Blue Orchid’ and set for an apparent release date April 18.

However, by Wednesday morning, all mention of the track had disappeared from the site. Also noted is another item entitled 'Blue Orchid' with an April 25 release date. While the April dates
are widely acknowledged to be too soon to be correct, this does add fuel to rumours that the album may also be entitled 'Blue Orchid'.

The band’s publicist has confirmed that the song will be the first single off the band's forthcoming album, though it was not made clear whether the image posted on the site will be the single's cover. The apparent cover image for the single features what seems to be Jack and Meg lookalikes in a pose similar to the cover of 2003's ‘Elephant’.

The thumbnail sized image (shown enlarged above) depicts the pair standing back-to-back against a bright red background, beneath a giant white microphone. And in a shocking turn of circumstances for Stripes purists Jack (or the Jack imposter) is dressed head to foot in black. On the upside however, this is topped off by a new hat and there's no sign of a frankly ridiculous handlebar moustache. And while Meg's Doppelganger sports a new Mod-ish crop, it also seems she's holding an egg. Whether this is the band's new look, an old promo picture from the 'Elephant'-era or a mock-up shot designed to once again toy with fans and the media is currently unclear.

The band's new album was recorded at Jack White's Third Man Studios in his hometown of Detroit. As with ‘Elephant’ - which was made at Toe Rag studios in London - the recording was done on vintage analogue studio equipment with the whole record being recorded in a reported two weeks.

As previously report at Xfm Online, earlier reports gave the new album's US release date as June 14 (meaning a probable UK release of June 13) coinciding nicely with the band’s self-confirmed appearance at Glastonbury later that month.
