Oasis: “V2005’s Fantastic… Except Maroon 5”

added 16 August 2005 at 11.42

While he may have only ever seen one good band there (The Coral, fact fans), Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has guaranteed the Oasis day at least will be “fantastic” at V2005 this weekend. The Guv’nor talks festival sh*gs, D-list superfans and f*cking Maroon 5…

In a new interview, Noel Gallagher has delivered his pre-V2005 manifesto, and unsurprisingly, while he may have had bad experiences in the past, he thinks this year might be pretty good,

“The day we’re on is fantastic,” he explains to NME, “Apart from Maroon 5, every band that’s on the bill are friends of ours. There’s The Stands, Jet, The Zutons, The La’s and us on the same stage. So our backstage area will be great.

“I’ve been a few times, and only ever seen one good gig – that was The Coral a few years ago. I’m looking forward to it, it’s the only festival we’re doing in England this year. I think it could be a good crack.”

Against popular opinion, Noel confirms he didn’t hand-pick the bill entirely (“Well if we did, Maroon 5 wouldn’t be on it.”) and, while the backstage area may be a haze of cigarette smoke and Northern accents, he’s not entirely happy about the infamous V celebrity VIP list,

“I am a bit concerned about the kind of crowd we’ll get, it’s all East Enders extras and fucking D-list celebrities all there for a day out. Cat Deeley and all that…, It’ll be alright, it’ll be alright.”

In terms of festival advice, Noel keeps it simple (“Plenty of cash, plenty of cigarettes and skins, and a lift home!”), but, unlike his brother, isn’t so worried about festival hygiene,

“Fuck it, who wants to stay clean if it’s muddy? Fucking join in, have a laugh. It doesn’t really matter. (Echo And The Bunnymen frontman) Ian McCulloch’s the only type of person who’ll walk round in white trousers looking like a lunatic. Even if it’s sunny you get dirty anyway, so I’d just go with it man.

“[But] who the fuck wears white parkas anyway? – him [Liam], Ian McCulloch and Paul Weller. He likes his concrete, Liam.”

The Oasis mainman also adds some specific advice as to where best to have sex (“Somebody else’s tent!”) but if it’s party you’re after, it can only be on The Guv’nors bus…

“You can get 16 people on a tourbus, you can leave at any point, you’ve got a proper bed, and a fridge, and telly to watch the football. Say no more.”

V2005 will take place from August 20-21 at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire. All weekend and day tickets for both sites are now sold out.
